Yes, prosthetic services are covered under all Medicare plans and under most commercial plans.
It is hard to determine an exact timeline on when a new amputee will receive their prosthesis. It mainly is dependent on how long it will take the amputated limb incision site to heal, and the time it will take for swelling to decrease. Once the patient’s amputated limb has fully healed it usually takes anywhere from 2-8 weeks for them to receive their prosthesis. It is important to remember that our clinicians work under doctors. They will yield to them on when to begin prosthetic care.
Prosthetic supplies like liners, socks, and suspension sleeves are covered each year under insurance. Prosthetic sockets may be replaced sooner if there is a change in function, physiology, or the prosthetic socket previously provided is defective. Prosthetic feet are generally meant to last the patient 5 years unless there has been a change in patient function or weight. A new prosthetic foot may be provided if their old foot is broken.
